Discover our historic gardens in the Lake District
Thomas Mawson Gardens
The gardens were completed in 1909, shortly after the house. Lindeth was to remain in the ownership of the architects, and Mawson was their ‘Go To’ garden designer of choice, though they are not on archive record, (something that is not uncommon). The structure and planting are stereotypical of Mawson’s design vision.
Structure and planting
The structure of the gardens remains remarkably intact, exhibiting Mawson’s trademark terraces and tree planting – many of the trees are contemporary to the house. The terraces are a graceful device to enhance outside living space on Summer days, easily sitting the house into the steep hillside.
Original and mature
The planting has matured over the decades, giving Lindeth complete privacy and seclusion. The gardens remain strikingly intact, and are being subtly restored where needed. They bring a Secret Garden vibe that enhances any stay at Lindeth Fell.
